The stately temple design is one of the most
recognizable architectural styles in Key West.
During the mid 1800s, American architecture experienced a period
known as Greek revival. With concepts borrowed from Athens’s
fifth century BC Parthenon, designs for houses and public buildings
were based on a rectangular two-story block, low-pitched roof, and
formal columns symmetrically placed across the front gabled entrance
side. As the concept moved west and south from its northeastern
area origins, it evolved somewhat to meet local taste and practicalities.
What survived became more commonly referred to as Classical Revival,
and its influence inevitably reached even the isolated shores of
Key West.
