| The Shotgun house was so named because with all
of its doors opened one could fire a shotgun from front to rear without
hitting any part of the home.
To the author’s knowledge this has not been tested in recent
years, but perhaps this was a common occurrence in the colorful
past of Key West. The design came to be popularized here in the
mid-1800s, when the cigar industry was moved from Cuba. Stogies
were rolled, packaged, and distributed around the world from Key
West factories. At its peak, the industry employed as many as 20,000
Cuban emigrants, and to house this workforce the hundreds of shotgun
style houses now located around the city were constructed. Originally,
simple, economic designs they have been embellished over the years
with fanciful facade elements and attached structures.
